The Junior Masters

Alvaro Quirós attended at La Cala Resort where he actually participated in this title during his junior days

Last week, 8 teams of four juniors – two girls and two boys – competed for the annual La Cala Resort Junior Masters title. The teams represented 8 Spanish golf federations; Andalucia, Madrid, Galicia, Castilla La Mancha, Extremadura, Asturias, Murcia and Valencia. The competition featured 36 holes of strokeplay over two days, with the best three scores counting for each team. The victors were the team from Galicia, scoring a total of 444, just 12 over par (gross) – not bad for a bunch of kids! They were 9 strokes ahead of Madrid, with Andalucia coming in 3rd, with a total of 459.
The presentation ceremony was held at the La Cala Resort clubhouse on 4th. January and was attended by European Tour rookie Álvaro Quirós, who achieved the distinction of winning the very first tour event he entered, namely, the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa last month. Álvaro actually played in this event in his junior days and has promised to return to La Cala Resort to tackle the new Europa course.
La Cala Resort has now been officially recognised by the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as the largest complex of its kind in Spain, with 60 holes, comprising the 3 18 hole courses, plus 6 par three holes attached to the David Leadbetter academy.

What a boar!!

Recent visitors to the Costa del Golf will have noticed the incredible amount of damage done to several golf courses by a family of wild boar. These animals sometimes venture down from the forests, seeking grubs and acorns and find the fairways and rough ideal in the search for a tasty meal. Fortunately, they showed a remarkable awareness of the etiquette of golf and spared the greens, which is more than can be said for some golfers. Those courses involved worked wonders to ensure that their courses remained playable and visitors suffered minimal inconvenience. Santa Maria Golf Club, one of the courses affected, has now decided to install an electrified fence round the perimeter of the golf course, a distance in excess of 10 kilometres – an expensive project. But in view of damage sometimes caused by another kind of bore – self styled ecologists who have a penchant for ruining greens using various chemicals, it will be money well spent. Golf Leisure Breaks Daily Competitions continue at Santa Maria as well other popular golf courses. Contact Julie on 952 58 29 43 or email julie@golflb.com
