WORLD MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TO FINCA CORTESIN

The European Tour has just announced Volvo’s take over as title sponsor of the World Matchplay Championship, replacing the annual Wentworth event which was inaugurated in 1964 by the late Mark McCormack’s IMG (remember the Picadilly?). Wentworth’s loss is Andalucia’s gain, as the host for at least the next three years will be the magnificant Finca Cortesin Golf Resort in the municipality of Casares. Sadly, Miguel Angel Jimenez’ 2007 victory was the last at Wentworth which has enjoyed 44 years of unrivalled success. Due to Volvo’s new commitments, this year’s Volvo Masters will also be the last to be hosted by Valderrama, with a new venue likely to be located on the Asian continent, where Volvo’s name has become synonymous with golf. So if we’re losing the Volvo Masters, where’s the benefit to the Costa del Sol?

Now i am observing the US Open nowadays and I was extremely impressed with the way that Phil Mickelson played his round of golf. He shot an remarkable round of -5 under par, to finish day two at -1 par. The man he is chasing after for the number a single world ranking, Tiger Woods, didn’t have anywhere as extraordinary a round, but still played respectable and shot a round of +1, to finish his second round at +4. It will probably be really a tournament over the remaing two days, and I wonder if Mr. Woods can get back his form and capture his 15 main championship or will this be Phil Mickelson’s time to finally win a US Open- I guess we will have to wait and see how this will finish up. On a side note, once again, Ian Poulter had on a rather distinguished pair of golf trousers. He is certainly one of golf’s most dazzling personas.
