THE RYDER CUP – WHO WOULD YOU PICK?
Posted August 1st, 2008 by adminOn Sunday 31st August, Nick Faldo will have the unenviable task of selecting two players to complete his team for the Ryder Cup match in September. The team as it stands now would be: Padraig Harrington, Lee Westwood, Henrik Stenson, Robert Karlsson. Miguel Angel Jimenez, Graeme McDowell, Soren Hansen, Oliver Wilson, Martin Kaymer and Justin Rose.
No Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Paul Casey or Colin Montgomerie. Although Hansen, Wilson, Kaymer and Rose are especially at risk, with Ross Fisher, Ian Poulter and others needing only one or two good results between now and CP day, let’s assume that the qualifiers remain as they are. So how is Faldo going to decide on his two picks? Monty has been the team’s hero for years, and always raises his game for the Ryder Cup, but by his own admission, he’s playing rubbish right now. Then there’s the flamboyant Poulter, playing brilliantly at the moment. Ignoring his poor finish in The Open, the mercurial Garcia seems to be close to solving his putting problems. So with Donald injured, Casey lacking any sort of form recently, my choice would be Garcia and a toss-up between Monty and Poulter. But everything could change in the next four weeks with four big-money tournaments still to be played. Watch this space.
