SO YOU’D LIKE TO TAKE UP GOLF?
Posted October 3rd, 2008 by adminIf you’re reading this page, it’s likely that you already play, but you probably know someone who would like to be introduced to this wonderful sport. But why golf, rather than one of the many other sports available? There are many reasons for choosing golf, but here are just a few.
In the first place, golf is one of the few sports which can be taken up in middle-age and continued into old age. Golf is no longer out of reach financially to most people; a starter set of golf clubs can be purchased for as little as 150€, or even less for second hand clubs. A round of golf can cost about 60€ and will take about four hours to play. That’s only 15€ an hour – cheaper than tennis and many other sports. Nine holes on a par three course is ideal for beginners and can cost as little as 20€. You don’t need to be an athlete or have exceptional ability. Golf has a unique handicapping system which allows players of varying ability to play against each other on equal terms. Golf provides a wonderful opportunity to switch off from every-day cares and relieve stress. It is also a great social game, where one can meet old friends and meet new ones.
So How & Where Can I Start?
The Costa del Sol is ideal for golfers of all abilities, including learners. There are many teaching academies and most golf clubs have there own practise areas and teaching professionals. The winter climate is the best in Europe, so that learning to play golf can be combined with a short winter break away from the worst of northern Europe’s worst winter weather. The opportunities for learners are almost endless, a typical example being the Greenlife 9 hole par three course and the adjacent Positive Golf academy which has all the facilities needed for learning, practising and playing the game within a few short days. The opportunity to play at an early stage is important, as newcomers need to be able to convert lessons and practice into actual play as soon as they are able to strike a ball reasonably well. Constantly hitting golf balls on the driving range can soon become boring, if there is no end product. I have specifically mentioned Greenlife because Golf Leisure Breaks began introducing learners there six years ago by organizing regular Thursday meetings there with beginners in mind. The morning begun at 10:00am with a bucket of practise balls and a lesson from the resident teaching pro. This was followed at 11:00am by a competition on the par three course (nothing too serious!). Within a few short weeks, many of the beginners had acquired proper handicaps, enabling them to play on any golf course in the world. Thursday mornings became so popular that they are still on our calendar today, and are still enjoyed by many of the original players. It still remains excellent value at only 30€.
