HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Thursday 30th. October sees the beginning of the end of an era, as Valderrama Golf Club hosts its final Volvo Masters tournament. Arguably the most important event on the European Tour calendar, the Volvo Masters usually decides who will win the Vardon Trophy as leader of the Order of Merit. Record prize money ensures that at least four or five players will be in the running for the Vardon Trophy, which was won a record eight consecutive years by Colin Montgomerie. Justin Rose will be defending both his titles (an unprecedented feat), but surely this will not be the last Volvo Masters? Volvo, who will be sponsoring the World Matchplay Championship from 2009, are taking that event from Wentworth to Finca Cortesin in Casares, so perhaps they envisage the same tactic for the Volvo Masters, an event with which their name is synonymous. My guess is that it will probably be re-instated somewhere in the far east, where Volvo are intent on breaking into this lucrative market. Watch this space…. But for now, Valderrama is much more accessible for local golf fans to watch Europe’s top players in action and Valderrama is one of the best spectator courses in Europe, so don’t miss this unique opportunity. Advance tickets for the whole week are only 76.50€ or 58.50€ for seniors and include practise days. More info on the events official website www.volvomasters.com
