SO NOW YOU’VE TAKEN UP GOLF – WHAT’S NEXT?
Posted October 24th, 2008 by adminA recent article on this page offered a way for those wishing to take up golf to break the vicious circle (no handicap, no golf: no golf, no handicap). The regular Thursday meetings which began seven years ago, offered the opportunity for newcomers to arrive at the Positive Golf Academy in Elviria for a group lesson with a resident professional and some practise with a bucket of golf balls. The idea with complete novices was for the pro to ascertain whether they were sufficiently competent in striking a ball, to venture on to the par-three Greenlife course and join those who were competing in the weekly Golf Leisure Breaks competition. As a result of the article, six newcomers arrived and were warmly welcomed by the group. Four of them immediately appreciated the opportunity to experience ”real” golf, as opposed to merely thumping balls off a practise mat and enjoyed nine holes under the the helpful wing of one of our regular players. They quickly learned some of the basic rules and etiquette of the game and enjoyed the cameraderie of the traditional get-together in the clubhouse afterwards. All in all, a perfect introduction to what golf is all about at a cost of a mere 30 euros. These four will follow in the footsteps of many regulars, who have acquired handicaps and joined their local golf club. One has even joined our group who will be visiting Antequera soon for a weekend’s golf. The other two newcomers? Unfortunately, these two ladies chose to misunderstand the concept and expected a full half hour lesson each from the professional, who was most encouraging and advised them that they were ready to try their skills on the Greenlife course. However, they refused to play with anyone else and generally were unwilling to mix with others in the group, eventually insisting on a refund of their 30 euros. These are hardly the qualities that any golf club would welcome in new members and these two might well consider turning their attention to some other activity which does not require any of the social graces.
