ONLY 6 WEEKS TO CHRISTMAS, BUT 2009 IS HERE ALREADY…

…if you are a golf pro playing on the European Tour, that is.  Only a few days after the final tournament of 2008 – the Volvo Masters – the 2009 Race to Dubai has begun with the HSBC Masters in Shanghai.  The fact that it is still 2008 and Europe has not yet annexed Asia is neither here nor there as far as this multi-million euro gravy train is concerned.

Global recession has yet to impact on professional sport generally and professional golf specifically, but the man-in-the-street is already feeling the pinch. And one of the first things to go when the financial going gets tough is usually the holiday, or these days, one of them. So as an area which relies heavily on golf tourism, what can the Costa del Sol do to remain an attractive winter destination within holiday budgets which are bound to be revised downwards? Well, judging by advance bookings which Golf Leisure Breaks is receiving, the answer could be for many of our golf clubs just to carry on what they are already doing. It has not gone unnoticed that in many cases, green fee prices have been pegged to 2005 levels, while in others, green fees have been drastically reduced. Travelling to the Costa del Sol is cheaper than ever and dining out remains excellent value, especially if you know where to go.* Our own competitions at Sta. Maria, Parador and Calanova are often fully subscribed, largely thanks to their popularity and to their positive co-operation in accepting the difficulties in arranging competitions almost on a daily basis. Providing the quality of service and of course presentation remains at a high level, dedicated golf tourists will be prepared to sacrifice other luxuries, such as food and rent, in order to continue with their essential winter golf break.
