A WEEKEND IN ‘REAL’ SPAIN
Posted November 21st, 2008 by adminThe much anticipated trip to Antequera was a resounding success – perfect sunny weather, a great hotel, an excellent but testing golf course, but most important of all, a great bunch of people who mixed well and were determined to have a good time.
The weekend was a perfect example of golf’s ability to remove barriers, as this was a truly international group, comprising golfers (and their non-playing partners) from Germany, Scandinavia, Ireland, Scotland, England, Tunisia and Zimbabwe, most of whom are resident here on the coast for much or all of the year. The weekend comprised Friday and Saturday nights at the splendid Antequera Golf Hotel, with breakfast and dinner, two rounds of golf (including buggy) on the José Maria Cañizares designed Antequera golf course. The hotel even provided transport from the Costa del Sol and back, so everyone could enjoy an uninhibited dinner with a glass or three of wine!
The golf course itself can be a formidable challenge on the first visit, but passed the acid test by earning praise even from those who struggled. To make the golf a little more interesting, Golf Leisure Breaks provided a trophy for the best individual score and the best pair better-ball score aggregate over the two rounds. Congratulations to 7 handicapper John Mitchell, a member of Guadalmina Golf Club, who was the individual winner with stableford scores of 34 and 29 points and to Mary & Jim O´Shea, who dove-tailed perfectly to record better-ball scores of 38 & 36 points to win the pairs competition. Mary and Jim assured us that there was never a cross word, as indeed the case with all the married couples who played together. Our thanks to everyone who joined us in Antequera for ensuring that the weekend was such a success.
Future events to look forward to include our annual match with the ITAGS from Ilford in England, which takes place on Friday 28th November at the Calanova Golf Club. This will be followed by our Christmas competition at Sta. Maria Golf Club on Monday 22nd Christmas. Our next away trip is hoped to be a St. Valentine´s weekend at the Arcos Gardens golf resort (near Arcos Frontera, Jerez). More news on this in the near future, but for more information on the ITAGS match and the Christmas competition, call Julie or Leila on 952 582 943.
