Costa Team Win Annual Challenge Match
Posted December 5th, 2008 by adminThis time last year, a visiting team from Ilford, England, won the inaugural match between the I.T.A.G.S. and the Golf Leisure Breaks Golf Society, who fielded a team to represent the Costa del Golf.
Last year’s match was played on Mijas International’s Los Lagos course in atrocious weather conditions, and resulted in a narrow win for the visiting team. Local weather forecasts for this year’s match were that similar conditions would apply on Friday 28th December, when the I.T.A.G.S. arrived to defend their trophy at the Calanova Golf Club, but fortunately, the teams were rewarded with a bright, sunny, if somewhat chilly day, to the relief of all 40 players. A perfect day was rounded off with a prize-giving dinner at the Area 51 restaurant, when the trophy was passed to the Costa del Golf team for safe-keeping until next year’s contest.
Both captains were careful to avoid announcing the exact result during the speeches, but I can reveal that our team won eight of the ten fourball matches and halved the other two. Despite the apparent one-sided nature of the result, several of the matches were closely contested with some excellent scoring. The success of this team match, played Ryder Cup style better-ball match-play, indicates that head-to-head match-play golf provides a welcome
change to traditional stableford competitions, so much so, that the Golf Leisure Breaks Golf Society (G.L.B.G.S.) now challenges any Golf Society, whether locally based, or from abroad, to similar matches during 2009. Since there is now a plethora of golf societies here on the coast, we should have many similar days to look forward to. Interested parties should call Jullie or Leila on 952 582 943.
