Horses For Courses

I am lucky enough to be able to play the course at Parador’s Royal Málaga Golf Club fairly regularly, so it was really gratifying to see the drastic improvements in the condition of the course over the last two months. The Parador, as it is popularly known, is unique among Costa del Sol golf courses, most of which are designed along American lines. Although technically it could be described as a links course due to its proximity to the beach, it is more typical of a traditional English parkland course. Eminently walkable, the tree-lined fairways offer a fair penalty for missed fairways, without the added penalty of lost balls; the stately eucalyptus trees are also home to hundreds of brilliant green parakeets, which once migrated from Africa, but decided that our climate was to their taste.

The Parador was the first Andalusian club to host a European tour event, the first in 1991, followed in 1999, the tournament in both cases, being the Tour España Masters. They were won by Vijay Singh and Miguel Ángel Jiménez respectively, illustrating that the European Tour hold the course in high regard. Having been constructed in 1925, the course has been undergoing refurbishment and remodelling, with the introduction of several lakes and streams. The greens are now fast and true and the fairways are immaculate; green fees have been kept to a reasonable level and offer great value during December and January at just 56 euros. What more could anyone ask? Call Julie or Leila on 952 582 943 to reserve your round, or why not join us on any Wednesday to play in our social Stableford competition for just €50?

A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR?

Perhaps not, but all of us at Golf Leisure Breaks wish all of our readers and loyal clients lots of luck and good health in 2009.
