JUNIOR MASTERS AT LA CALA
Posted January 9th, 2009 by adminSince 2004, La Cala Resort has hosted this annual team event, which this year featured teams of four from nine of the regional Spanish golf federations. Each team comprised two girls and two boys, playing 36 holes of stroke-play, with the best three cards counting. Since its inception, the event has featured some of Spain’s best junior golfers, two of them – Pablo Martín and Alvaro Quirós going on to win European Tour tournaments.
This year’s winning team was Andalucia, captained by Jacinto Sánchez Montoro, whose daughter Rocío shot an impressive 71 in adverse weather conditions on the first day, six strokes better than the next best score. This was Andalucia’s third victory in five years, confirming the strength in depth for the region and promising an excellent future for Spanish professional golf. Prizes were presented by Jorge Campillo, currently ranked the world’s number two amateur golfer, with a +3,8 handicap.
