Hit Solid Iron Shots With These 3 Tips

Golf is a game where the difference between success and failure lies in the ability to execute certain shots on a consistent basis. While this seems easy on the surface, anyone who has played this game knows that it takes a solid golf swing to hit solid iron shots.

The irons are typically harder to hit because they are less forgiving. Better players want to play blades or smaller headed cavity back irons because they can work the ball better, but higher handicappers usually have bigger headed irons in hopes of hitting better shots. The key however is in the swing.

1. First and foremost you need to have a smooth swing that matches your personality. That statement sounds silly, but if you tend to walk slow and talk slow, then slow your swing down. If you tend to speed around and talk fast, try to speed it up a bit. In general most golfers will benefit from a slower more relaxed swing.

2. Start your swing with a one piece takeaway to hit solid iron shots. The one piece takeaway is where the hands, arms, and shoulder move back in line with each other and the wrists do not break until above halfway back. This is crucial to hit better shots because it causes you to swing smoothly and on plane.

3. Don’t cast the golf club from the top, instead start your downswing by gently turning your hips to the left. This ensures a smooth transaction and promotes a more shallow angle of attack which works great when hitting those long to mid irons. Casting from the top is also the most common cause of the slice.

This tips should help you hit solid iron shots, which will in turn put you closer to the hole and have the opportunity to make more birdie putts! After all lower scores is what the game is all about!
