EL CHAPARRAL REBIRTH

One of my favourite golf courses in the early nineties was El Chaparral and no-one was more disappointed than I when the course literally disappeared, reverting to its original wilderness. So when I visited the course in 2005 when it re-opened, it was as if there had been a time-warp, and the 12 years between closing and re-opening had never existed, the course being exactly as I remembered it. So the decision to include El Chaparral on the rota of Golf Leisure Breaks popular stableford competitions was an easy one to make and the first meeting on Wednesday 6th was a success, in that all agreed that the course was in perfect condition, the greens in particular being up there with the best on the coast.

El Chaparral boasts what many would claim is the perfect lay-out, with 6 par fives, 6 par fours and 6 par threes, but what struck me most was the obvious desire to look after the interests of the golfers, from the initial welcome in the clubhouse and pro shop, to the course guide by the buggymaster, explaining the distances to the greens and the flag colours which showed the pin positions. A deciding factor in choosing El Chaparral was the competitive green fee, which includes shared buggy* and which will be even more attractive from next week, when the summer green rates kick in. El Chaparral has now been reserved every Wednesday until the end of the year.
