Fair Play
Posted June 19th, 2009 by adminThe Golf Leisure Breaks Golf Society is unique in that it was formed with visiting golfers in mind, rather than residents, who are adequately catered for by the plethora of pub societies which have mushroomed along the coast. A feature of these popular stableford competitions which take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, is that everyone has a chance of winning (we don’t welcome bandits). Many of our competitions are won with 36 or 37 points. However, every now and then one of our members turns in an exceptional performance which is what golf is all about. The first which comes to mind was that of Paul Parry, a 74 year old playing off a handicap of 12. A few months ago, Paul played the Sta. Maria course in 73 shots, joining the elite club of players who have played a round of golf in less shots than their age. Another was more recent, when 15 visitors turned up on Wednesday, 10th. June to play the challenging El Chaparral course. Gary Little, a 7 handicapper from the Woburn Golf Club in England, played the course in 74 strokes, just 2 over par, despite starting with a double bogey on the first hole. His tally of 41 points was 7 better than the field. Over the 12 years that we have been running these stableford competitions, I have been lucky enough to meet some very interesting characters, many of whom have become good friends. I cannot finish this article without mentioning Dubliner Liam Roche, who at the age of 68, still maintains an official club handicap of 8, but can regularly hold his own when visiting the Costa del Golf, off his society handicap, which fluctuates between 4 and 6. Liam is a true supporter of our golf society and often introduces many of his Irish friends to our competitions; I’m sure he will be the next to “beat his age” in one of our competitions. Many thanks, Liam. If you’d like to play in one or more of our regular competitions, just call Julie or Paul on 952 582 943
