DON’T KNOCK IT ‘TILL YOU’VE TRIED IT!

There are approximately 50 golf courses along the 80 kilometre stretch between Málaga and Gibraltar. Some might be categorised as “easy”, while others might be described as “challenging”. Very few, in fairness, deserve to be described as unfair, or impossible. Unfortunately, not every golfer is capable of making objective judgements when describing a recently played golf course. Ergo, a rotten round of golf = a rotten golf course, while 42 stableford points scored to win a trophy converts a pretty ordinary golf course into an all time favourite, to be listed among the world’s top ten golf courses.

Having played nearly all the local courses during the past 25 years, I have learned to be honest with myself.  Invariably, shots dropped during a round have been due to bad judgement or bad execution, regardless of whether the course should be classed as easy or difficult. The acid test of the quality of a golf course is how much the course is enjoyed, even on a bad day.  The next time someone tries to put you off playing a certain course, ask him how well he played there. Better still, play the course anyway and make up your own mind. Valderrama has defeated some of the world’s best golfers, but no-one has ever accused it of being a bad golf course.

Sometimes a recommendation from a friend is exactly what you need to pick a fun golf outing. For example, I recently wanted to play a course on the eastern shore of Virginia (USA) and a friend, who is a 17 handicapper, told me to pass on that course. He said that the course was very tight and because of it’s situation by the water, made it very windy. The result? A miserable day on the course looking for lost balls and choosing the wrong clubs. There are lots of times when I “knock it before trying.” :)
