The fall and rise of Lee Westwood
Posted December 4th, 2009 by adminNo-one could have predicted that the Race to Dubai would have turned into such a one-horse-race, as Lee Westwood put upstart Rory McIroy in his place, together with the rest of most of the world’s best golfers. Westwood, who admitted coming close to giving up tour golf following a dramatic slump after snatching the Harry Vardon trophy from Colin Montgomerie, emerged once again as a real threat to the supremacy of Woods and the top Americans by winning the Dubai World Championship by a remarkable 7 strokes and with it the Harry Vardon Trophy as the winner of the Race to Dubai. The win netted him a staggering 1.6 million pounds sterling and elevated him to number 4 in the World Ranking list, where he joined five other europeans in the top ten. Rory McIlroy’s third place finish was remarkable enough in that his putting stats were among the worst in the field of 58, whereas Westwood’s final round of 64 contained fewer putts than anyone else, while his weekend rounds contained not a single dropped shot.
