THE WOODS SAGA
Posted December 14th, 2009 by adminBy now, most readers will have followed the recent troubles of Tiger Woods in the media, which I will leave to the gossip columnists. But it is worth wondering what the possible consequences might be to the PGA and European tours and to golf at the lower levels generally. Of course, at best, it could all be a storm in a teacup and be forgotten in a week or two. But the worst scenario would be if tournament sponsors decide to withdraw or reduce their support from many events, especially in the current economic climate. If Tiger decides to cancel his appearance at more events, after withdrawing from his own Tiger Challenge, the interest which he has single-handedly created in the past could evaporate quickly. At the lower reaches of the game, this could result in a significant reduction of those inspired to take up golf as a result of his exploits. Whichever way it goes, public perception of Tiger Woods as an icon and role model, will never be the same. It’s tough at the top.
