WOODS AFTERSHOCKS

The Tiger Woods saga rumbles on and receives maximum media coverage on a daily basis, so followers of his problems will be well up to speed on his personal problems. Withdrawal of personal sponsors will have little effect on Woods, who is already close to being a $billionaire. But his fellow American tour members will certainly feel the pinch when sponsorship dries up and events are cancelled if he fails to return quickly to the PGA Tour. After all, it was the emergence of Woods which attracted sponsorship and TV money to turn the PGA Tour into the gravy train which it has become.
Fortunately, the European Tour has no such problems, having to contend “only” with the effects of the global recession, since Woods’ appearances in Europe have been restricted to Majors and World Championships.
The future of professional golf and the livelihoods of hundreds of American pros now depend on whether Woods has the courage to face his peers, the media and his millions of fans by resuming his extraordinary career.
Golf will not be the same if he simply disappears, but so much dependence on one man was not very healthy, so it will merely be a case of normal service being resumed.
