Fuengirola Land Swap
Posted May 19th, 2010 by adminDespite several courses lying in neighbouring areas, Fuengirola doesn’t have its own golf course nor driving range. All this is soon to change as a land swap deal has been agreed between the council and the ‘Reserva de Higueron’ urbanisation. Fuengirola council will inherit a 4,307m2 plot of land in the Carvajal area; as well as a sum of money as weighting in the deal. In return, the ‘Reserva de Higueron’ will receive a similar sized piece of land. The total size of the municipal golf school – 25,000m2 – will incorporate a driving range, club house and restaurant. The plans for the golf course haven’t been made public but, if I could hazard a guess, it would be along the lines of a pitch and putt course similar to Benalmadena’s. The facilities are expected to be finished by 2011 so we won’t have long to wait until another home-grown winner on the European Tour emerges from the Costa del Sol! This is no mere boast. A similar initiative in the village of Guadiaro, Cadiz, has produced players of the calibre like Alvaro Quiros. When the bell for ‘school’s out’ rings a visitor to that area will be confronted, not by boys and girls running to the nearest football pitch or tennis courts, but carrying their clubs to the junior golf school on a site that used to be Golf La Cañada’s club house. That is precisely the way to get youngsters interested in the sport.
