Spanish Open stays in Spain

ALVARO Quiros enjoyed a welcome return to form by winning the Spanish Open in Seville, overcoming a three shot deficit, and only needing a par on the 1st hole of a sudden death play off to emerge victorious. In the process, he became only the 4th Spaniard to land the title since its inception in 1972: Garrido, Seve and Sergio Garcia being the others. The event was characterized by the leaders over the first three rounds doing their best to let the chasing pack catch them. Quiros, hailing from Cadiz and ranked 37th in the world, now lies 7th in the Ryder Cup standings. Playing the game with a perpetual smile on his face he is a breath of fresh air to many with his ‘grip it and rip it’ philosophy. Let’s hope if qualification is on merit alone he blows hot for Europe at the CelticManor in September. Having followed his grouping around the Parador recently  I was impressed by his 300+ yard drives; not so much by his lack of consistency with a wedge in his hands.
