Local boy misses out at Majorca Open

SWEDEN’S Peter Hanson overcame a ‘double hit’ – and penalty stroke – to beat Spain’s Alejandro Canizares on the 1st hole of a sudden death play-off in the Majorcan Open. Recovering well from this error – the like of which I haven’t seen since, if my memory serves me well, TC Chen did the same in the final round of the US Open twenty years ago, Hanson went on to make two further birdies to match the four under round of 66 by Canizares. In fact, the final aggregate score of -6 at Pula Golf, was testament to the recently lengthened layout of the course with players struggling to read the tricky greens all week.  Although a bittersweet finale for Canizares this represented a welcome return to form for the son of the former Ryder Cup stalwart, who was forced to go to the Q-School last November to regain his card. Having now made three successive Top 10 finishes his card should be secure for the following season with results like this. I had the honour of playing with Alejandro in the recent Andalucia Open Pro-Am and he is a true gent. Putting the amateurs in our team at ease from the first tee, offering advice when needed and, generally, dispelling the myth that  professional golfers act in a standoffish manner whilst playing in these warm-up events.
