Valle Romano

THE latest golf course to open on the Costa del Golf  is ‘Valle Romano’ located near Estepona and designed by Cabell Robinson. Following on from his other gems such as Santana and Finca Cortesin it shares similar characteristics like open fairways and undulating greens. After sponsoring several European Tour tournaments, it is now finally open for play. Having taken the opportunity to play the course my overall impression was of the maturity of the layout considering the short period of time open. Greens were fast and true. Impressive holes included the Par 4 5th where an accurate mid or short iron is required to reach the green; anything to the right will find a watery grave. The back nine is far more scenic and, without divulging too much information, when you reach the Par 3 11th it will dawn on you as to how the course got its name. The view from here is worth the price of the green fee alone.  The course has several long Par 4′s on the inward stretch.  A buggy, although not a necessity, will increase speed of play especially for older golfers. My gut feeling is that given the investment the owners and management will be holding out to stage a major event over the next few years. This is borne out by the super vantage points around the course; a couple of thousand spectators could easily stand by the 18th without encroaching too close upon the green. Why not take advantage of this soon to be the ‘one to play’ course and sign up to play a special ‘Spring Tournament’ on May 29th at 09.30 ‘shotgun start’? The format is individual stableford and the entry fee a very reasonable 55€ – includes your green fee, shared buggy and a brunch cocktail. There will be prizes for the first three golfers in each handicap catergory plus ‘longest drive’ and ‘nearest to the pin.’ Please contact the Euro Weekly News Golf Page for more information at euroweekly@golfcostadelsol.net. We will be taking entries until 48 hours before tee off.
