(Nearly) shot of the week

This was a close call what with Dustin Johnson grounding his club in sand on the 18th hole during the USPGA Championship and subsequently incurring a two shot penalty ruling him out of the play off. With over 1,200 bunkers to choose from this was one time when a fairway splitting drive was required. To be fair, this was a tough break on Johnson who had quietly played himself back into contention over the closing holes whilst most golfers were predicting that the winner would come from either Kaymer, McIlroy or Watson. Even more so after having imploded at the recent US Open when in contention entering the final round. Rules are rules?

However, just shading it, in one of the more memorable sports celebrations was Spanish Moto GP 500cc rider Jorge Lorenzo. Jumping off his bike after winning his 7th Moto GP victory of the season in the Czech Republic he calmly walked over to the neighbouring golf course – still in his leathers – to line up a short putt Villegas style. It was probably within ‘gimme’ range (or a ‘dado’ just in case you find yourself playing with a Spaniard) and there didn’t seem to be much break from where I was looking. Alas, he promptly got a touch of the jitters and missed it. Left with a simple tap in Lorenzo pointed out the obvious saying, ” I couldn’t put the ball in the hole but at least I could win the race.” Just as well as the flagpole was still in the hole but that is enough of rulings for one week!
