Little Britain
Posted September 3rd, 2010 by adminA late addition to the golfing calendar this but there is still time to play in a worthy charity event in aid of the English Cemetery in Malaga at Lauro Golf this weekend. Firstly, a little bit of history. It is located near the bull ring, where St. George’s Church stands, and was the brainchild of William Mark, British Consul from 1824-36. Incredible but true to report that Spain was still in the throes of the inquisition well into the 19th century and, as a result, any non-Catholics had to be buried on the sea shore in darkness with almost ‘infidel’ status. Taking this as an affront, Mark lobbied for members of other denominations to be given a dignified burial and his wishes were granted; albeit if being constructed outside the then city walls.
It is unique in the sense that not only are non-Catholics buried there but that it became a focus point, not solely for British expatriates, but for the resident international community at large. Indeed, amongst the 1,000 graves one could almost take a history tour as writers such as Gerald Brennan, failed revolutionaries, drowned sailors and shot-down airmen are all represented. Far from being a morbid tourist attraction it also doubles as a botanical garden stretching over some 8,000 square metres and there is a gift shop and visitor’s centre to explore.
Unfortunately, many of the walls need rebuilding and new trees planted. To further this end a registered charitable non-profit organisation was set up dedicated to its maintenance and upkeep. It hopes, by arranging events like the one at Lauro on Saturday, to raise the profile of the oldest non-Catholic cemetery in Spain. Lauro Golf has very kindly agreed to donate all the proceeds raised by green fees on the day. Entry fee is by normal summer green fee prices: 36€ green fee; 83€ 2 green fees plus buggy; 17€ Lauro Red members and a nominal 5€ for Lauro Blue members. Please see their ad on this page for contact details and to confirm your inscription.
